Men in the UK will soon be able to buy Viagra over the counter for the first time after the erectile dysfunction drug was reclassified.
Those aged 18 and over will no longer need to see a GP for a prescription after the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced that it is changing the status of Viagra Connect tablets so they can be sold in pharmacies following a conversation with a pharmacist.
US pharmaceutical company Pfizer said it is working on plans to launch the non-prescription version of the medicine in the UK in the spring of 2018. A four-pack of the sildenafil tablets will cost around £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99. Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day. Sildenafil is already available on NHS prescription free of charge.
The decision to reclassify the drug follows a public consultation, the MHRA said. Pharmacists will be able to determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and can give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine, potential side effects and assess if further consultation with a general practitioner is required.

But some men, including those with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure or those taking certain “interacting medicines”, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
It is hoped that making the drug more widely available will mean than men who may have not previously sought help will be more likely to do so. Health officials also hope the move will also help steer people away from buying drugs websites operating illegally.
The MHRA said that erectile dysfunction medicines are a “popular target” for criminals selling unlicensed and counterfeit medicines, over the past five years the Agency has seized more than £50m of unlicensed and counterfeit erectile dysfunction medicines.
“This decision is good news for men’s health,” said Mick Foy, MHRA’s group manager in vigilance and risk management of medicines. “The move to make Viagra Connect more widely accessible will encourage men to seek help within the healthcare system and increase awareness of erectile dysfunction.
“Erectile dysfunction can be a debilitating condition, so it’s important men feel they have fast access to quality and legitimate care, and do not feel they need to turn to counterfeit online supplies which could have potentially serious side effects.”
Dr Berkeley Phillips, UK medical director at Pfizer, said: “The availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies from next year will offer men who are eligible for the product a new and convenient way to access sildenafil, a commonly prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction.
“We understand some men may avoid seeking support and treatment for this condition, so we believe giving them the option to talk to a pharmacist and buy Viagra Connect could be a real step forward in encouraging more men into the healthcare system.
“As erectile dysfunction may be a sign of an underlying condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, there could also be a wider benefit to public health in the long term. We hope that this forthcoming new opportunity to purchase a genuine treatment via pharmacy will also reduce the likelihood of men turning to potentially ineffective and dangerous counterfeits from illicit sources.”

The move comes after MHRA figures have linked the introduction of non-prescription Viagra to a reported jab with a new medicine developed by scientists in 1996.

WASHINGTON — The first of its two drugs to enter the market will have a price reduction of about half, according to industry experts.
The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer says the drug will be sold in 60 million doses and the drug's maker is expected to announce a final price cut in the coming months, but it is not yet certain whether the company will reduce its prices.
The drug was originally developed by Pfizer, who was acquired by GlaxoSmithKline, but later switched to Eli Lilly and Company, a unit of the drug maker.
The company says that the company has a 30 percent discount on its U. S. sales of Viagra.
The drugmaker has not commented on the price cut or announced a new drug plan. The company is seeking to have its U. sales price decrease of about 25 percent in consideration of any reduction in sales of its drug. Pfizer has not announced a new plan for the drug.
The company's U. sales of Viagra will be $12 billion, while its U. sales will be $6.1 billion, according to company sources.
Dr. Steven Nissen, a professor of pharmaceutical and medical sciences at the University of Southern California, and co-founder and chairman of a biotechnology company in San Diego, said that the drug company is committed to working to improve its business by lowering the cost of its products.
"I think they're making a real dent in our sales," Nissen said. "This is a great, new product, and they're doing it very, very hard."
Viagra is the first approved treatment for erectile dysfunction, or impotence, that Pfizer has tried in the U. since 1998. It has been on the market since 1998, when the patent expired. The company said the drugs are already available on prescription.
Pfizer said the company's U. sales of Viagra will be higher than those of other drugs and would reduce its price by about 50 percent.
The company says it will reduce its U. sales of Viagra to about $3 billion a year by reducing its U. sales of the drug and raising the price of the drug to $5.5 billion by the end of the year.
The drugmaker is looking at a potential price cut of up to $10 billion.

The team, led by Dr. Jan Vlaes, research associate professor at the University of Amsterdam, studied the side effects of sildenafil, an inhibitor of the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5, and found that sildenafil-treated patients had a higher incidence of sexual dysfunction compared to those who did not use sildenafil.
Professor Vlaes also studied the effect of sildenafil on men’s sexual function, a condition where a man has a low libido, and found that sildenafil had no effect on men’s sexual activity.
“The finding that sildenafil-treated men have a lower incidence of erectile dysfunction may help to understand the link between erectile dysfunction and sexual function, and may lead to more targeted therapies for men with this condition,” Dr. Vlaes said.
The team also discovered that men who were taking sildenafil had a significantly higher rate of sexual activity, a finding that was consistent with the findings in pre-clinical research, the journal reported.
“This study opens up a avenue for treating erectile dysfunction in men with sexual arousal disorder, and further underscores the importance of improving treatment protocols,” the journal said.
Viagra and erectile dysfunction are not the only erectile dysfunction drugs that are being researched. Pfizer Inc. has recently announced that it will offer sildenafil to men who have a medical condition such as Peyronie’s disease or scleroderma.
Researchers have also been investigating the effects of sildenafil on sexual function, a topic which will be covered in upcoming lectures at the University of Amsterdam.
“This study, along with other recent studies, is the first to demonstrate the efficacy of sildenafil in treating erectile dysfunction,” the journal said in a statement.
Dr. Vlaes is a research scientist in the Institute for Clinical Research in Amsterdam and his research focuses on drug development, and his research involves the development and manufacture of medicines for medical conditions such as erectile dysfunction and sexual dysfunction.
Vlaes and his co-authors will attend a recent conference in Amsterdam next week, and a poster will be shown by the University of Amsterdam.
Vlaes’s research focuses on the development of new drugs for erectile dysfunction and sexual dysfunction.
